OpenAI just launched ChatGPT Work, its answer to Claude Cowork. Everyone is asking which is better. After using both, I think that is the wrong question. Here is the better one.
Here is the shift almost everyone is missing. You do not have to prompt these tools one question at a time anymore. You hand over an outcome, and the tool goes and does the whole job.
Say you type, "Analyze last quarter's sales and give me the three biggest opportunities." Instead of answering in a chat box, the tool connects to your apps, digs through the numbers, works across a bunch of steps, and comes back with a finished thing. Here is what that looks like in real life. Ask for a competitor breakdown and you get back a clean doc with the research already done. Ask for a client update and you get a slide deck built out. Ask for a simple way to track something and you can get a small working web app. Both are strong at this. That part is not where they split.
Option 1Claude Cowork: The Collaborator
Claude Cowork started as a research preview back in January 2026, went generally available on April 9, and on July 7 it expanded to mobile and web. That last part matters. Your sessions and files now follow you across devices, it can keep working in the background, run scheduled tasks, and ask for your approval right from your phone.
In my experience, Cowork feels like a partner. It asks more clarifying questions before it starts. It explains what it is doing as it goes. And it checks in with me before any bigger decision instead of charging ahead on its own. When it is about to commit to something, it pauses and makes sure that is really what I want.
Who this suits: reach for Cowork when you want a second brain in the room. If the task is fuzzy, or the stakes are high, or you just want a check-in before it commits, this is the fit.
Option 2ChatGPT Work: The Executor
ChatGPT Work launched on July 9, 2026, and it runs on GPT-5.6. From my time with it, it feels more proactive. You hand it an outcome and it generally just starts moving toward it. Less back and forth, more momentum.
I noticed this most when I was building. Software, internal tools, little automations, that is where ChatGPT Work really clicked for me. I would describe what I wanted, and it would go build a first version fast instead of stopping to ask me ten questions first. I have honestly been loving that.
Who this suits: reach for ChatGPT Work when you already know what you want and you just want it done. Fast, autonomous, heads down execution. Especially when you are building tools or automations.
Head To HeadThe Real Difference: Where Your Work Happens
Underneath the two personalities is a deeper split, and it is the one that should actually decide for you. It comes down to where your work happens.
ChatGPT Work lives in the cloud. It is strongest when your day runs through cloud apps, research, and analysis, and you want polished docs, decks, charts, and reports out the other side. Claude Cowork lives closer to your actual machine. It reads and writes the real files and folders on your computer and can even drive your browser, so it shines on the messy stuff: downloads, spreadsheets, PDFs, dashboards, and cleaning up what is already sitting on your desktop.

ChatGPT Work leans on the broader ChatGPT ecosystem instead, which is lighter to start but gives you less fine-grained control.

So here is how I actually choose, task by task. Both are strong, so this is not about crowning a winner. It honestly depends on the job in front of me.
- You want collaboration and check-ins. Go with Claude Cowork. It asks questions and pauses before big moves.
- The task is fuzzy or the stakes are high. Cowork again. You want that second opinion before it commits to anything.
- You already know the outcome and want it done fast. ChatGPT Work. It starts executing right away.
- You are building software, internal tools, or automations. ChatGPT Work is where it clicked for me.
- You want work happening in the background or on your phone. Cowork now runs on mobile and web with scheduled tasks and approvals.
- Your work lives in cloud apps, research, and docs. ChatGPT Work. It is built for the cloud.
- Your work lives in local files, spreadsheets, and your browser. Claude Cowork. It works right on your machine.
